These speakers dubbed the Speaker Buddies were created by Alex Underwood as an homage to a often neglected material: Expanded Polystyrene, a lightweight material that is often regarded as useless.  The speakers work in pairs, and depict child-like postures, meaning certain bedroom dj’s will finally have an audience.

This impressive sculpture called the “Sound Wave” was created by Korean artist Jean Shin, and is meant to show “the inevitable waves of technology that render each successive generation of recordable media obsolete”.
The piece is a part of The Museum of Art and Design’s exhibit “Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary”

Altec Lansing recently released what they say is the first 2.2 desktop speaker system, called the Expressionist Bass. Each 10″ high, cone shaped speaker has a 1.5″ driver and a 4″ subwoofer mounted on the base, and feature an auxiliary input for media and MP3 connection. Its frequency response is rated at 40Hz-16kHz.

Most DJ’s know that wearing a Halloween costume during a gig is usually a pretty bad idea. Depending on what the outfit is, it is only a matter of time before you tear it off either due to it being too hot, or simply getting in the way of you being able to mix properly. Being as how I will be spinning a party at a friends house this year as opposed to a professional establishment, I figured I would see what type of outfits I could find online.

Sadly I couldn’t find anything I personally wanted to wear, but here’s some outfits I would laugh my ass off if I ever saw a DJ wear while in the booth.

The Record Cabinet by Atocha Design has me thinking I need to do some remodeling in my living room.

The cabinet has 4 CD drawers, and 6 soft-touch gliding vinyl drawers, each of which can hold up to 95 upright LPs. The top of the cabinet is wide enough to fit a couple of turntables and a mixer, meaning you don’t have to move more than a step to switch records.

On the other hand, at $12,500 I think I would actually have to sell my entire record collection to be able to afford it.

After 5 years of hard work, my Audio-Technica headphones finally broke last week (during a gig no less which was beyond miserable). Consequently I spent the weekend researching which pair of headphones I wanted to get, which turned out to be quite the mission due to the absurd amount of headphones on the market.

After a lot of reading, and a bit of consulting with some of my colleagues I finally wound up with these:

Sennheiser HD-25-SP-II

Despite having known for a long time that Sennheiser Headphones had a reputation for being good in the studio, I never thought spending $200+ on a pair of dj headphones that were probably not much better than a pair i could get for under $100 was a good idea. Apparently I was wrong.

Aside from being a tad tight on your head (guess it depends on how big your dome is), these things sound amazingly clear, with good bass definition, and crisp highs. They also don’t have a coiled cord which is surprisingly my favortie thing about them because now I don’t constantly have to untangle the chord.

Why am I telling you this? So that if you’re headphones break tonight you know what to do.

Some cool insight into the production of a legendary album.

While you may have thought the boombox bikes were over the top, they hardly compare to this DJ mobile made by Dutch artist Olaf Mooij. The DJ mobile was designed to be used as a driveable PA system, which you would park, and then stand up through the open sunroof while you showcase your mad skills on the turntables to the surrounding neighborhoods.

While vinyl may becoming popular again among regular listeners, I don’t foresee CD’s experiencing any type of revived popularity in 15 years. So if you were wondering what to do with all those CD’s you mistakenly thought would turn into collectors items, then this may be for you.

Danny Seo took 150 CD’s he got from a Goodwill thrift store and recycled them into a dumbell weighing 10 pounds.
